Alwazar has endured four months of siege under General Lassusar, leaving the city perilously short of food and water. Lassusar’s campaign is also personal: years earlier, Sonja blinded him while leading mercenaries through Zamora.
Lassusar offers single combat as a way to end the siege, but the duel is undermined when Boraxis drugs Sonja. Achmal spirits her away to Calum-Barai, where she gathers reinforcements and prepares to return as the enemy breaks through Alwazar’s gates.
